People love to tell me, “You complain a lot about people not liking you or buying your books.”

Yeah, I do. You know why? Because I see exactly where people’s priorities are and they’re not pretty.

Have I been an asshole?

Oh, absolutely.

But not the way you think. I’m not out here picking fights with strangers just for the hell of it. I’m an asshole to the people who look at a book that could actually save livesa book that costs ninety-nine cents — and say, “Nah, not interested.”

I’m an asshole to the people whose actions and words tell me they don’t give a damn that someone dies by suicide every 40 seconds in America.

They don’t care that trans kids are ending their lives at rates that should make us sick to our stomachs.

They’ve got “more important” things to do.

So yeah I’m going to keep being an asshole to that crowd.

Because what they’re saying is, “We don’t care enough to lift a finger.” And if you think I’m going to smile politely at that?

Wrong guy.

Here’s the truth: I am one of the most caring, loving, kind people you will ever meet until you cross the line.

Once you do? You’re done.

Dead to me.

We’re finished.

So yes I’ve been an asshole.

And I’ll keep being one to the people who choose their comfort and their petty bullshit over the lives of people who are hurting.

Because if that makes me the villain in your story, fine.

I’ll wear it.

But at least I can sleep at night knowing I gave a damn.
