Let's be honest, the number of genuine Misfits aficionados among us is quite modest. This is largely due to two key factors. Firstly, the Misfits emerged from the deep underground scene,long before most of us even saw the light of day. Their initial obscurity, coupled with the raw, gritty nature of their production, makes even Darkthrone’s sound seem polished by comparison. It's a testament to their raw energy and unapologetic fervor that they remain an iconic, if niche, cornerstone of the punk legacy.However, let's be honest, it was just pure noisy chaos until “Garage Days” by Metallica came out. No, not “Garage Inc” the double disc reissue, I mean the $5.98 original version most of us had on vinyl or cassette. The only stream we had back then was a stream of piss. Still, the most underrated Metallica album, in my opinion, introduced us to “Last Caress/Green Hell.” Maybe 3% of us knew the song before then, and I have always been a music nerd, yet I had never heard it. Or if I had, I dismissed it as noisy garbage. Sadly, most of us were missing out on iconic horror punk classics like “Die Die My Darling” and a ton of other killer anthems that existed before Ice Nine Kills were even a twinkle in their parents' eyes. Now, there will be some music elitists out there talking about their knowledge of Samhain and all things Danzig. Good for you. I am so excited you know more than us music plebes and you are the music expert. Still, today, the majority of people wearing a Misfits shirt know nothing about them, and that is a fact.Second bombshell, I think the whole devil horn look is stupid. And well, good ol' Glenn, from a guy who did music press for a long time, I can tell you he is an asshole, like the king of assholes. And though the fight will continue for the ages over pre and post-Glenn days, “Dig Up Her Bones,” “American Psycho,” and “Scream” are classics in my opinion, though “Where Eagles Dare” will always be my favorite Misfits song. The moral of the story is: The Misfits own the horror punk/rock crown, end of story. If you want to actually be cool, don’t just wear the shirt. Crazy idea: listen to the band and know a song or two.
