Jake Bannerman's novel, "2 Die 4," follows college students Kelly and Buck as they uncover a cursed VHS tape during a fraternity scavenger hunt. The tape, found in a morgue, initially appears to be a snuff film depicting a violent murder. However, they soon discover it's far more sinister when a freshman pledge is found murdered on campus, mirroring the tape's content.
As they try to understand the tape, they learn about its connection to the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and a ritual involving human sacrifice for power. They realize the tape is not just a recording but an entity that feeds on those who watch it, manifesting shadows and influencing events. They are pursued by Chad, the fraternity president, who wants the tape for the ritual, and Smith, a rogue FBI agent who was part of the original ritual in 1998 and is now bound to the entity, seeking to reclaim the tape.
Their friend Mike, who was also involved in the 1998 ritual, attempts to help them but is ultimately consumed by the entity. Kelly and Buck eventually decide to destroy the tape, believing it will end the curse. They throw it into a burning warehouse, which unleashes the entity in a physical form, killing Smith and the remaining frat members.
Despite the destruction of the tape, the entity is not defeated; it is freed and continues to hunt Kelly. Buck dies in the hospital, implied to be another victim of the entity. The novel concludes with Kelly being picked up by a mysterious female FBI agent who has been hunting the tape since 1998, suggesting that Kelly, now a vessel for the entity, is part of a new, ongoing struggle.
